Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District

Committed to protecting, maintaining, and enhancing the water quality of Lake Wallenpaupack

Lake Wallenpaupack, located in the heart of the Pocono Mountains’ Lake Region, is a popular destination for boating, fishing, swimming, snowmobiling, and other activities. With 52 miles of shoreline and an overall length of 13 miles, Lake Wallenpaupack boasts 5,700 acres of open water, making it the third largest lake in Pennsylvania. Lake Wallenpaupack is within a day’s drive of many major metropolitan areas, making it a prime vacation destination for millions of inhabitants of the Mid-Atlantic States.

Our most effective and economically-viable option is to control pollution by stopping it at the source, or preventing it altogether.

What We Do

We Manage the Watershed

Our Mission is to protect, maintain, and enhance the quality of Lake Wallenpaupack and its watershed. Every day, the lake faces the threat of pollution from sources such as stormwater and agricultural runoff, stream bank and lakeshore erosion, invasive species, malfunctioning sewage disposal, and chemical runoff. These threats can harm Lake Wallenpaupack, our local economy, and our quality of life.

As a non-profit organization, we strive to provide leadership and encourage our elected officials, community associations, residents, and government partners to work together and achieve our Mission. If we all work together, we’re able to build consensus, manage the lake and watershed in everyone’s best interests, and achieve greater success. Simply stated, we’re working together to protect OUR lake. read more

How We Do It

Treating the water through filtration, chemical applications, or biological augmentation just isn’t feasible due to the sheer volume. The costs would be so great and the threats so constant that we’d go broke and be fairly ineffective at keeping the lake clean.

Our most effective and economically-viable option is to control pollution by stopping it at the source, or preventing it altogether. Responsible and effective watershed management requires working across multiple disciplines to affect change. read more
